Nx Head Tracker for Headphones – Quick Start

Learn how to use the Nx Head Tracker device together with the Nx Virtual Mix Room, Abbey Road Studio 3 or Nx Ocean Way Nashville plugins, in order to improve mixing, tracking and monitoring on headphones.

Please note: All instructions in this video apply to the Abbey Road Studio 3 plugin as well as the Nx Virtual Mix Room plugin. The video was originally created in 2016, when the Nx Virtual Mix Room plugin was released, so only that plugin is shown in the video. However, the Nx Head Tracker can be paired with the Abbey Road Studio 3 plugin in exactly the same way.

About the Nx Head Tracker
The Nx Head Tracker is a small wireless Bluetooth sensor that attaches to your headphones and communicates with Waves’ immersive audio plugins (Nx Virtual Mix Room or Abbey Road Studio 3). It tracks your head movements in full 360 degrees, with maximal speed and accuracy. It then passes the information to the plugin in order to optimize the realistic spatial effect created on headphones.

Quick-Start Instructions

  1. Place the Nx Head Tracker at the top-center of the headphone arc, with the L and R icons at the sides matching the left and right of your headphones. If you position the device otherwise, it will not track your head movements properly.
  2. Verify that your computer’s Bluetooth is on and that it supports BLE.
  3. Insert the Nx Virtual Mix Room plugin on your master buss. The “Nx Head Tracker” window will open automatically. Go to the “Bluetooth” tab.
  4. Turn on the Nx Head Tracker device by pressing the button on the unit.
  5. Mac: Your Nx Head Tracker device will be automatically recognized and added to the device list in the Nx Head Tracker window > “Bluetooth” tab.
    Windows: Open your computer’s Bluetooth settings and pair it with the Nx Head Tracker. Once paired, the Nx Head Tracker device will automatically be recognized and added to the device list in the Nx Head Tracker window > “Bluetooth” tab.
  6. Mark the Connect check box. See the numbers under Tracking Data start to change as the Nx Head Tracker moves.
  7. In the Nx Virtual Mix Room or Abbey Road Studio 3 plugin, under the Tracking Device menu, select the Nx Head Tracker. The head in the plugin will start to move according to the Nx Head Tracker.

Sensor Fusion option
In the Tracking Device menu (see step #7 above), you may alternatively choose the Sensor Fusion option, which lets you use both the Nx Head Tracker and your computer’s webcam simultaneously, combining the advantages of each and bringing the head tracking rate up to 80 fps.
